Description

Prostate Synergy™ combines high potency extracts of pygeum africanum, stinging nettle root, and saw palmetto with lycopene for the comprehensive support of prostate health.

Pygeum africanum is also known as the African Plum Tree.  The most recent meta-analysis published in the Cochrane Review (2002) concluded that pygeum is significantly effective in reducing signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH).  Compared to placebo, the pygeum group experienced a 19% reduction in nocturia, 24% reduction in post-void residual volume, and a 23% increase in peak urine flow.1

The root of Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has long been used in traditional herbal medical systems.  A 2007 review indicated that a number of studies demonstrate efficacy of nettle root in improving symptoms of BPH.2  Multiple mechanisms of action may be involved and the review states "It seems likely that sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), aromatase, epidermal growth factor and prostate steroid membrane receptors are involved in the anti-prostatic effect."  Lignans from nettle root appear to bind to sex hormone binding globulin and displace bound hormones, thus increasing the free fraction of certain sex hormones.3  The most significant studies showing an effect on BPH used nettle root in a combination with saw palmetto.  In these studies, the combination improved lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and urine flow better than placebo and similar to finasteride in subjects with enlarged prostates.4,5

In addition to the evidence above (combined with nettle root), there is evidence that saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is effective in improving lower urinary tract symptoms from BPH when used alone.6,7  The 2002 Cochrane Review meta-analysis determined that saw palmetto significantly reduces nocturia and improves peak urine flow, and these results were similar to those for the drug finasteride.8  In the 2009 Cochrane Review update, 9 new studies were added and these associations were weakened.  Despite the lack of statistical significance, a trend of benefit remained in the saw palmetto groups.9  It has been suggested that the discrepancy between studies is due to methodology, product quality, and/or individual variability.  It remains possible that some individuals do not respond to saw palmetto while others do.

Lycopene is a carotenoid found in many pigmented plants and fruits, including tomatoes.  Epidemiological studies suggest that men with higher intakes of lycopene (as a supplement or in tomato products) or higher blood levels of lycopene may be at a lower risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer.10,11,12  Additionally, lycopene appears to inhibit the growth of normal prostate epithelial cells, with the authors concluding that it "might have an effect on prostate development and/or on enlargement of prostate tissue as found in benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)."13

Two capsules of Prostate Synergy™ provides 100mg of 13% phytosterol pygeum africanum extract, 200mg of 4:1 nettle root extract, 320mg of 85-95% fatty acid saw palmetto extract, and 10mg of lycopene.
