Homocysteine is an amino acid that accumulates in the body when there are inadequate levels of the cofactors that process it (vitamins B6, B12, folic acid and trimethylglycine (TMG)).  Higher levels of homocysteine aggressively promote both atherosclerosis and dementia.  By simply supplementing these cofactors to the diet, we’ve seen homocysteine levels plummet in our patients.

Initially designed as a specialty formula for persons with high homocysteine levels, newer standards for homocysteine recognized by experts in prevention (below 7 UMOL/L) have moved this indispensable formula to the mainstream.

In 1,100 people with a mean age of 76, homocysteine was measured and over 8 years, 111 (10%) of them developed dementia.  The risk of dementia was 80% higher for every 1 Standard Deviation rise in homocysteine level.1

In another study, people with homocysteine levels above 14 UMOL/L had a 450% risk of dementia compared to those whose homocysteine level was below 11 UMOL/L.2

A study done by Queen’s University Belfast published in the journal Stroke in 2002 showed a significantly higher homocysteine level in victims of stroke, vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared to healthy controls.3

In a series of studies done by the Laboratory of Neurosciences in Baltimore, Kruman and colleagues showed how either low levels of folic acid or higher levels of homocysteine impair the ability of brain cells to repair their DNA.  The result was a more rapid rate of brain cell death, particularly in the presence of Beta Amyloid protein (the protein that accumulates in Alzheimer’s disease).4,5

Joseph Pizzorno, in his "Textbook of Natural Medicine", states that chronically low levels of vitamin B12 may lead to irreversible changes in the brain, but that some recently diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease patients may experience complete reversal of the disease after B-vitamin supplementation.6

Heart Attack and Stroke

Many early observational studies show an association between high levels of homocysteine and cardiovascular disease.  More scientific, randomized controlled trials, however, produced mixed results.  These studies looked at whether or not the reduction of homocysteine using moderate doses of various combinations of vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid were actually effective in preventing heart attack, stroke, or the need for urgent intervention to open a blocked artery.  Some of these studies showed that treatment produced no benefit7,8,9,10 and others showed significant benefit.11,12,13,14,15,16  It is not clear to scientists why these studies don’t all exhibit the same results.  It’s possible that other factors for cardiovascular disease risk were not equally controlled for from one study to the next.

Macular Degeneration

Another very destructive age-related disease is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness in our aging population.  Getting old is tough enough even when we keep our eyesight.  We could find only one study relating homocysteine to this devastating disease.  Fortunately, it was a very scientific randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial, reducing homocysteine with vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid.  Reducing homocysteine with these vitamins for 10 years resulted in a whopping 41% reduced risk of AMD.17

Designed to Combine

Homocysteine Processor™, in conjunction with our Foundation Formula™ provides 800mcg of 5-MTHF (the active form of folic acid), 300mg of vitamin B6, 999mcg of vitamin B12 and 1,600mg of trimethylglycine (a potent methyl group donor), all working synergistically to convert homocysteine to methionine, promoting the pathway that reduces homocysteine levels and leads ultimately to glutathione (antioxidant) production.  For those needing a bit extra power in optimizing homocysteine levels, particularly those taking niacin for lipoprotein management, our N-Acetyl Cysteine formula can be added at two to four capsules per day.  N-Acetyl Cysteine reduces homocysteine by a different mechanism, binding to the homocysteine and delivering it to the kidney for excretion via the urine.  For these folks, extra TMG is also often helpful.  This can be added with our TMG formula.

There is no formula on the market with as much processing power to lower dangerous homocysteine levels.  The only remaining question is whether you will require one, two or three capsules per day or need added N-Acetyl Cysteine or TMG.  Checking your homocysteine level and adjusting the dose will answer this question for you.
