Description

DHEA is an adrenal androgen whose level declines with age by about 2% per year beginning at age 29. DHEA has been widely studied in many clinical circumstances including normal aging. In aging adults, DHEA may help to maintain a healthy immune system, a healthy skeletal system, a bright outlook on life, a healthy cardiovascular system, a healthy cortisol level and a healthy brain. We encourage you to study the abstracts below and also do your own research on this remarkable adrenal steroid hormone. Click on the links to view the Pubmed abstract.

What DHEA does not do:

Studies show that while it may help maintain a healthy brain with aging, DHEA in aging adults does not enhance cognitive function in short term studies in men or women. Nor does it increase muscle mass in men or raise testosterone levels in men.

Selected Study Summaries:

J Am Geriatr Soc. 1999 Jun;47(6):685-91
Endogenous levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, but not other sex hormones, are associated with depressed mood in older women: the Rancho Bernardo Study.

This cross-sectional study of 699 women aged 50 to 90 years old evaluated the association between hormones and mood. The results indicate that lower DHEA-S (the sulfate form found in the blood) is profoundly associated with lower mood in this population. The researchers conclude that DHEA is a neuroactive (affects the brain) hormone and may affect mood.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2004 Sep;89(9):4708-15
Dehydroepiandrosterone increases endothelial cell proliferation in vitro and improves endothelial function in vivo by mechanisms independent of androgen and estrogen receptors.

This in vitro study attempted to elucidate the mechanisms behind DHEA’s positive effect on vascular function. The study suggests that DHEA may increase nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, which helps blood vessels dilate and increase blood flow to tissues. An impairment of this process is termed "endothelial dysfunction" and is a risk factor for cardiovascular events.

J Clin Psychopharmacol. 2003 Feb;23(1):96-9
Influence of DHEA administration on 24-hour cortisol concentrations.

This single-blind placebo-controlled crossover study evaluated the association between DHEA supplementation and serum cortisol levels. Cortisol is a "stress hormone" from the adrenal glands that can be toxic when chronically elevated and provides a nice marker of physiologic stress. The results demonstrate that DHEA supplementation significantly reduces serum cortisol levels.

Arthritis Rheum. 2002 Nov;46(11):2924-7
Dehydroepiandrosterone treatment of women with mild-to-moderate systemic lupus erythematosus: a multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

This multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of DHEA in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) demonstrated that DHEA supplementation is well tolerated and may reduce disease flares and symptoms. This suggests that the hormone may modulate the immune system in some way.

J Womens Health Gen Based Med. 2002 Mar;11(2):155-62
Acute dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) effects on sexual arousal in postmenopausal women.

This rather interesting randomized, double-blind, crossover study of high dose DHEA (300mg one time dose) evaluated the impact of DHEA on acute sexual arousal from watching an erotic video. The DHEA supplementation group demonstrated enhanced measures of sexual arousal compared to placebo.

Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2001 Sep;55(3):325-30
Double-blind placebo-controlled trial of oral dehydroepiandrosterone in patients with advanced HIV disease.

This double-blind placebo controlled study of DHEA in HIV patients demonstrated that DHEA supplementation significantly improved quality of life and mental function while having no effect of HIV viral load or immune cell counts.

Eur J Endocrinol. 2001 Oct;145(4):457-61
Metabolic effects of dehydroepiandrosterone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study of DHEA in postmenopausal women demonstrated that DHEA supplementation over 12 months significantly improved insulin sensitivity (a marker of diabetes risk), HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

Clin Endocrinol (Oxf) 2000 Nov;53(5):561-8
Effects of DHEA replacement on bone mineral density and body composition in elderly women and men.

This prospective study in older women and men (average age 73-74 years old) evaluated the effect of DHEA supplementation on bone mineral density (the measurement for osteoporosis), body fat, and fat free mass (muscle and bone mass). The study indicated that DHEA supplementation in this age group appears to improve bone mineral density, reduce body fat, and increase fat free mass.

Cycle-Breakers® note: Clinical experience and several research studies indicate that administration of DHEA in men does not raise serum testosterone levels and we do not recommend DHEA for that purpose.
